Film Scanning Setup Calculator

Choose your camera, lens and film format to estimate magnification, sensor coverage and optical distances for camera scanning of 35mm or 120 film.

How to use ForScan

Choose your camera, lens and film format. ForScan estimates the magnification needed to fit the full film frame within the portion of the sensor you want to use.

For example, a 35.7 × 23.8 mm sensor, a 36 × 24 mm 35mm frame and 95% sensor coverage require about 0.94× magnification in landscape orientation.

Distances u and v use a thin-lens model measured from the lens's principal planes. They do not tell you where to mount the camera on an F-Stand; that requires measurements from your actual setup.

Setup

95% leaves about 5% of each sensor dimension for framing.

Distances u and v are theoretical thin-lens calculations measured from the lens's principal planes. They are not measurements from the outside of the lens.

Physical Setup Distance

u + v is an estimate from a thin-lens model that assumes the two principal planes coincide. It is not the exact mechanical distance; the actual positions of H and H′ inside the lens are needed.
